Borders completes cross-USA trip- deCycles Indiana with a Simpsonville connection

Borders riding across America

Recent Collins graduate Chase Borders is on his fourth cross-country bicycle ride.
Borders is riding with deCycles Indiana, a non-profit ecumenical youth leadership program that offers summer bike trips for teenagers and young adults, on its Southeast America 2014 ride. The trip began in Key West, Fla. on June 21 and will conclude July 13 in Bloomington, Ind. as it passes through seven states – Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana – and covers 1,600 miles.
The group of 60-plus riders will travel through Shelby County from Lexington to Louisville next Saturday, likely in the early afternoon, on U.S. 60.

3 things that could save your life at the lake this holiday weekend

Here are three simple tips that can prevent injuries and save lives at the lake:

1. Wear a life jacket. More than 95 percent of people who drowned on Corps lakes were not wearing one. Swimming, falling off a dock, or falling off a boat are all common actions that lead to drowning—but drowning could be prevented in most cases if the victim simply had worn a life jacket. Visitors can borrow a life jacket at life jacket loaner boards or by asking a park ranger or park attendant.

2. Don’t swim out to buoys. Buoys float—you don’t. Many people commonly underestimate swimming distances, so landmarks such as buoys may appear closer than they actually are. Swimming in open water is dangerous due to unseen underwater hazards such as tree stumps, rocks and drop-offs. Not only is it unsafe to swim to buoys, but hanging on buoys is illegal and could result in a fine. The best place to swim is in a designated swimming area.

3. Know how to operate your boat properly. Knowing the ‘rules of the road’ with navigating and operating your boat or personal water craft properly are essential to maintain a safe environment on the lake. Take a safe boating course (most are free), stay up-to-date on boating regulations, and operate your water craft responsibly.

The Three Biggest Turn-Ons For Homebuyers

As a seller, you have a lot more control in pleasing buyers than you think. If you start the selling process by learning what buyers really want, you can prepare your home to come as close to their dreams as possible.

Here are the five biggest turn-ons for homebuyers and what you can do to please buyers.

Curb Appeal

You only get one chance to make a first impression. Your home should sell to the buyer from the curb. That’s how important curb appeal is. Your buyer should be so impressed, so charmed, so delighted that they want to leap out of the car and run inside.

How do you create curb appeal? Show attention to detail. Your home has to be prettier, cleaner and in better condition than its neighbors.

Start with sweeping the drive, walkway, and porch or entry of dirt and debris. Get rid of leggy bushes, wilted flowers and broken tree limbs. Plant fresh flowers in the front garden or in containers at the entry.

Power-wash the exterior and hand-wash the windows. Touch up paint around the windows, if needed. Paint the front door a fresh, modern color. Replace the door hardware and porch sconces.

Space

The number one reason why people buy homes is to have more room. Whether they’re moving from an apartment or moving up from the home they have, they want to have plenty of space to do the things they enjoy.

If you have a large home, you’re golden, but that doesn’t mean you’ve got it made. You can ruin a buyer’s first impression with too much clutter, so make sure to keep your home picked up so your buyer can see your home’s features clearly and easily.

What if you don’t have a lot of space? Plan to do some storing and staging. Rent a storage unit and put away all out of season clothes, toys, and home decorations and accessories. Clean off all tables and countertops so you have only the minimum of things your need to operate your home. Empty closets of anything that is “stored” and move it to the storage unit. The small expense you’ll pay in storage fees you’ll more than make back from your buyer’s offer.

Updates

There’s a reason why first-time buyers and singles tend to buy older homes – they’re more affordable than buying new. So unless your buyer is a building contractor, chances are they want a home that’s as updated as possible.

You may not be interested in putting in a new kitchen in order to sell your home, but you can do a few things to make buyers happy. Replace the most dated features – countertops, cabinet pulls, or appliances.

Bathrooms are so personal that they can easily turn buyers off. Invest in new towels, bathmats and a shower curtain. Throw out slimey soaps and limp ragged bath sponges. Replace with liquid shower and bath products. You can take all the new stuff with you to the next home.

Painting is expected by buyers, but don’t repaint the same colors that you chose 10 years ago. Pick an updated neutral like a warm grey instead of beige. Be sure to choose a color that will complement the architecture and flooring in your home.

Keep in mind that the typical home purchased in 2013 was 1,860 square feet and built in 1996, so homebuyers aren’t expecting your home to be a mansion, nor do they expect it to be new, but they do expect to see pride of ownership. The more tweaks, updates and repairs that you perform, the more confident your buyers will be that they’re choosing the right home.

Them Shops over There in Simpsonville—The Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass gaining speed-

I cycled past the construction yesterday of the Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass.  Yes there are two “p’s” and one”e”in the name, if they really asked for help from Kentuckians it would have been spelled in Kentucky-ease, “Them Shops Over There in Simpsonville.”

While there is only one sign facing away from the interstate at this time, I’m curious on the layout and lack of signage so far.

23808993

I also noticed the number of vehicles in the construction area has dramatically increased from heavy machinery to cars and light trucks.

The fixtures are going in, colors specific to the retailer are going on the walls, it is taking shape into a awesome place for under 10 year olds to hide in the clothes racks.

While it has been a highly controversial topic it is almost here.  The road construction has slowed to a maze of orange barrels on top of new asphalt and waiting for the traffic lights to turn on.

I’ll be out of the area on purpose for opening weekend, traffic will be a little too much for our small town.  All 5 of our police department should be available that day…..

Edit: Just found links to Shelby County Tourism’s interview with WDRB,  Katie Fussenegger is correct, it will be a traffic issue.   Maybe the Truck stop and the State will properly organize the traffic flow now?
